As I mentioned in the previous post, the last Dr. that we saw on Christmas Eve indicated that Emma's head was flat on the right side. Of course I could not stop worrying about this, so I decided to get a second opinion from a different doctor. I just wanted to be sure that I was doing everything that I could for her and if we did need to get a helmet, I wanted to do it sooner than later. We took her to the doctor and the Dr. said that it is not something to worry about at all. She said one of the things they look at when making a decision about a helmet is to see if the eyes line up symmetrically and Emma's eyes are perfect. I was so relieved to hear that!! She said yes, it is flat on the right side and yes, her ears are shifted a little, but that it will all correct itself as she grows. She said we were doing all of the right things by keeping her off the back of her head when she is awake and turning her head in the crib when she is sleeping. Emma does turn her head to the left and right side, but you can tell she is weaker on the left side. The Dr. said this will also improve as she grows. She gave us the option to take her to Children's PT dept., but said it was not necessary because they would probably tell us to do everything that we are already doing.
We had Ava with us as well and the Dr. said the flatness on the back of her head is totally normal. They see this all the time and it usually corrects itself as babies grow.
So, I am glad we got a second opinion and that their heads are going to be just fine! It is interesting how two doctors say different things. The first Dr.said she may need a helmet if it does not correct itself and the second Dr. that we see says that it would be too late for a helmet and she really does not see many kids with helmets these days. It can be so frusturating!!
